Karla attended the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine for her MD degree. She trained in pediatrics and in allergy/immunology at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium. She remained on the staff following her fellowship. She was elevated to Chief of the section in 2022.
