Colonel John F. Freiler currently serves as the Chief of Internal Medicine and Allergy/Immunology Consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General, Air Force Medical Readiness Agency (AFMRA), Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), Texas. He is the primary advisor to the SG and subject matter expert for Internal Medicine, Subspecialty and Radiology services. He also informs decisions regarding the staffing, readiness, deployment, education, training and career counseling for over 350 physicians.
Colonel Freiler hails from New Jersey and completed his undergraduate studies in Biotechnology with honors in Biopsychology at William Paterson University, Wayne, NJ. After college he worked in a pharmaceutical immunoassay lab. He then entered the Air Force as a Second Lieutenant and studied medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Piscataway, New Jersey under the Health Professions Scholarship Program. He was recommissioned as a Captain upon his graduation in 1999. He then completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Wright-Patterson Medical Center, Dayton, OH and Allergy and Immunology Fellowship at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC), San Antonio, Texas.
Colonel Freiler’s first assignment following training was as Staff Internist at McChord AFB, WA. Upon completion of fellowship training in San Antonio he served as Staff Allergist at David Grant USAF Medical Center. He then entered private practice as an Allergist with ENT and Allergy Associates, Parsippany, New Jersey prior to his recommissioning as Staff Allergist at Eglin USAF Regional Hospital, Eglin AFB, Florida. While there, he went on the serve as the Medicine Flight Commander, Associate Chief of the Medical Staff and OIC of the Allergy and Immunization clinic. Colonel Freiler returned to the San Antonio area where he served as the Clinical Core Faculty for the SAUSHEC Allergy and Immunology Fellowship GME program and Allergy and Immunizations Flight Commander at JBSA Lackland, Texas. Prior to entering the Air Force, he served in the US Army New Jersey National Guard as an Aircraft Electrician, Picatinny Arsenal, Wharton, NJ.
Upon military retirement Col Freiler will be entering solo medical practice as the founder of Advanced Allergy SA located in San Antonio, TX. He looks forward to enjoying time with his family, living a healthy lifestyle and keeping active. His favorite hobbies include working out with “the bands”, mountain biking, hiking and reading his monthly National Geographic magazine subscription.
