Gregory K. Lux, MD

Greg was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio.  His father, a professor at The Ohio State University, volunteered in 1962 for two years in India with USAID.  The family travelled west to Hawaii, Japan and the Asia-pacific to get to New Delhi and returned home heading westward thru the Middle East, Mediterranean, and Northern Europe.  They had circled the globe before he was in middle school.

At the end of his first year at the US Air Force Academy, he flew both the F-104 and F-111 supersonic at 30,000 feet while TDY to Edwards AFB.  After graduating magna cum laude from USAFA, Greg chose to attend Tulane Medical School on active duty, rather than pilot training.  He completed a residency in Pediatrics at Keesler AFB and then a fellowship program in Allergy and Immunology at WHMC.  He finished his training with a 14-year USAF obligation.

Although he was accepted into the Laboratory Immunology program at NIH, the selection committee decided it was time for him “to go to work” in 1983.  While on faculty at Keesler Regional Medical Center he was able to “crew” the USS Iowa (BB61) for five days upon her recommissioning from nearby Gulfport shipyards.  He was on board while they tested the big guns in the Gulf of Mexico.  Dr Lux was assigned next to USAFE at Wiesbaden AB.  He was directed to complete the development of a regional allergy program that would supervise allergy specialty care at 32 USAF and Navy hospitals and clinics throughout Europe.

He was certain that the program of training and supervision of primary care providers and allergy technicians at those facilities was well documented.  During the IG inspection his third year, however, the inspecting nurse found that the program was “sub-par”.  Rather than accept that inferior review, Greg was able to convince the hospital commander to fund a “repeat” inspection by the preeminent Col Michael Reid, the Special Consultant in Allergy to the USAF Surgeon General.  Within a month of the IG report Dr Reid concluded that the program had been implemented exactly as he had intended when he had written the relevant USAF regulations.  Major Lux was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal for that European tour.

Lt Col Lux finished his Air Force career at Eglin AFB Regional Medical Center and retired in 1994.  He then joined Sisters of Mercy in Springfield, MO, and provided allergy support to Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas for 25 years.  Almost always working as a solo allergy provider, he found that the Air Force was correct back in 1983:  It was time for him “to go to work.”  He was voted a “417 Top Doc” each of their surveys as “the allergist that local physicians would refer their family member for allergy evaluation and treatment.”

He has always spoken highly of the USAF Medical Corps and the specialty of Allergy and Immunology.  Dr Lux was elected to fellowship of the AAP, the ACAAI, and the AAAAI and awarded three MSM during his USAF career.  He truly loved his chosen specialty and the patients that sought his care.  He is now retired and focuses on fly fishing, gardening, and being a grandparent.  Together with his wife of nearly 50 years, he continues to travel the world.  They have three children (all of whom became attorneys).  They now have 8 grandchildren that live within hours of their rural home in the St Louis area.
